"Among the study's more noteworthy findings:

The highest annual death rates in 1955 were in children 1 to 4 years old (about 250 per 100,000 for boys and girls), but now the highest rates are in 15- to 24-year old males (about 200 per 100,000).
In 2004, death rates in the former Soviet Union and its satellites were the highest among the four groups of nations, although they were declining steeply from very high levels in the 1980s and 1990s.
While deaths attributable to communicable diseases have plummeted, mortality from violence and transportation-related injuries have become more common"
